Using Pest Control Products
Mixing
- ALWAYS READ THE LABEL and follow the label directions exactly;
measure, do not guess.
- Only mix the amount of product required. Do not store unused product
in the sprayer.
- Wear chemical resistant gloves and goggles while mixing and applying
pesticides.
- Do not leave pesticide containers unattended while mixing and
applying pesticides.
Applying
- Granular fertilizers containing pest control products are ready-to-use
and should be applied with a calibrated lawn spreader.
- Hose end attachment products will automatically mix the product
with water to achieve the correct spray ratio.
- Concentrates should be mixed according to the label directions.
They can be used in a tank sprayer or a hose-end applicator.
- The timing of an application is critical to controlling lawn &
garden pests. Refer to the product label for the correct timing of application.
- Keep children and pets away while applying pesticides, and do
not let them return to the area until it has thoroughly dried. If in doubt
wait 24 hours before re-entry.
- Remove toys, tools, furniture, birdbaths, etc. from the area being
treated.
- Do not spray in very hot, sunny weather (over 28°C). Spray
in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler.
- Do not spray in windy conditions. Do not spray into neighbouring
properties.
- Follow the label directions for watering i.e. water thoroughly
after application or do not water for 24 hours.
- Apply only to those edible crops listed on the label.
- Observe the “no-spray” interval before harvest for
fruits and vegetables (as specified on the product label)
- To determine safety on sensitive plants spray one or two leaves
and wait 24 hours.
- Do not spray fruit trees and flowers when in bloom to avoid risk
to pollinating bees
- For plants, ensure even coverage. Spray the least amount possible
to wet all leaves on both sides. When the spray is starting to drip off the
leaves you have enough on the plant.
- For lawns, measure the area to be sprayed to calculate the amount
of product required.
- When spraying weed killer take care not to let the spray drift
onto other plants.
- Clean up all equipment after use, including the garden hose.
- Wash hands and face with soap and water after applying pesticides
and before eating or smoking.
- Wash fruits and vegetables before eating.
